about

Composed in 1804 by Jeremiah Ingalls (1764-1828). Words by Isaac Watts, 1701.

The sentiment behind Watts's text—"How long, dear Saviour, O how long...?"—is said to have occurred to Ingalls while impatiently waiting for dinner in a tavern. Parodying Watts's verse, he began to sing:

How long, my people, Oh! how long
Shall dinner hour delay?
Fly swifter round, ye idle maids,
And bring a dish of tea.

Deciding that his impromptu melody was not a bad effort after all, Ingalls put the tune to Watts's text and thereby gave birth to this perennially popular fuging tune.

lyrics

How long, dear Savior, Oh how long
Shall this bright hour delay?
Fly swift around, ye wheels of time,
And bring the promised day.

From the third heaven, where God resides,
That holy, happy place,
The new Jerusalem comes down,
Adorned with shining grace.
