1.
Northfield 01:24
How long, dear Savior, Oh how long Shall this bright hour delay? Fly swift around, ye wheels of time, And bring the promised day. From the third heaven, where God resides, That holy, happy place, The new Jerusalem comes down, Adorned with shining grace.
2.
Soar away 03:06
I want a sober mind, An all sustaining eye, To see my God above, And to the heavens fly. Chorus: I'd soar away above the sky, I'd fly to see my God above. I want a Godly fear, A quick discerning eye, That looks to Thee my God, And see the tempter fly.
3.
Cowper 01:45
Forgive the song that falls so low, Beneath the gratitude I owe. It means Thy praise however poor, An angel's song can do no more. Great God, and wilt Thou condescend To be my Father and my Friend. I, a poor child, and thou, so high. The Lord of earth, and air and sky.
4.
The day is past and gone, The evening shades appear; Oh may we all remember well, The night of death is near. We lay our garments by, Upon our beds to rest: So death will soon disrobe us all, Of what we here possess. And when our days are past And we from time remove Oh, may we in thy bosom rest Thy bosom of thy love
5.
Windham 02:09
Broad is the road that leads to death And thousands walk together there; But wisdom shows a narrow path, With here and there a traveler. "Deny thyself, and take thy cross," Is the Redeemer's great command; Nature must count her gold but dross, If she would gain this heav'nly land. The fearful soul that tires and faints And walks the ways of God no more, Is but esteemed almost a saint, And makes his own destruction sure. Lord, let not all my hopes be vain, Create my heart entirely new, Which hypocrites could ne'er attain, Which false apostates never knew.
6.
White 02:11
Ye fleeting charms of earth farewell, Your springs of joy are dry; My soul seeks another home. A brighter world on high. Chorus: I'm a long time trav'ling here below, I'm a long time trav'ling away from home, I'm a long time trav'ling here below, To lay this body down. Farewell, my friends, whose tender care Has long engaged my love; Your fond embrace I now exchange For better friends above. (Chorus)
7.
Eternal day 02:32
Oh what are all my suff'rings here, If, Lord, Thou count me meet With that enraptured host t'appear And worship at Thy feet? Give joy or grief, give ease or pain, Take life or friends away, But let me find them all again In that eternal day. Oh what hath Jesus bought for me, Before my ravished eyes? Rivers of life divine I see, And trees of paradise. I see a world of spirits bright, Who taste the pleasures there, They all are robed in spotless white, And conqu'ring palms they bear.
8.
On Jordan's stormy banks I stand, And cast a wishful eye, To Canaan's fair and happy land, Where my possessions lie. Chorus: Oh, the transporting, rapt'rous scene, That rises to my sight, Sweet fields arrayed in living green, And rivers of delight. O'er all those wide extended plains, Shines one eternal day; There God the Son forever reigns, And scatters night away. (Chorus) No chilling winds, or pois'nous breath, Can reach that healthful shore; Sickness and sorrow, pain and death, Are felt and feared no more. (Chorus)
9.
North Port 02:49
Jesus, my all to heav'n is gone, Glory Hallelujah; He whom I fix my hopes upon! Glory Hallelujah! Chorus: I want a seat in Paradise, Glory Hallelujah! I love that union never dies, Glory Hallelujah! His track I see and I'll pursue, Glory Hallelujah; The narrow way till Him I view, Glory Hallelujah! (Chorus) Lo! glad I come and Thou, dear Lamb, Glory Hallelujah; Shalt take me to Thee as I am, Glory, Hallelujah! (Chorus)
10.
Greenwich 02:23
Lord, what a thoughtless wretch was I, To mourn, and murmur, and repine, To see the wicked placed on high, In pride and robes of honor shine. But, oh, their end, their dreadful end, Thy sanctuary taught me so, On slipp'ry rocks I see them stand, And fiery billows roll below.
11.
What wondrous love is this! Oh, my soul, oh my soul! That caused the Lord of bliss To bear the dreadful curse For my soul? When I was sinking down, Sinking down, Sinking down, Beneath God’s righteous frown Christ laid aside His crown For my soul. To God and to the Lamb, I will sing; I will sing; Who is the great I Am, While millions join the theme, I will sing. And when from death I’m free I’ll sing on; I’ll sing on; I’ll sing and joyful be, Throughout eternity I’ll sing on.
12.
In the cross of Christ I glory, Tow'ring o'er the wrecks of time; All the light of sacred story, Gathers 'round its head sublime. When the woes of life o'ertake me, Hopes deceive and fears annoy; Never shall the cross forsake me, Lo! it glows with peace and joy. When the sun of bliss is beaming Light and love upon my way; From the cross the radiance streaming Adds more luster to the day. Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, By the cross are satisfied; Peace is there that knows no measure, Joys that from all time abide.
13.
Farewell, my friends, I'm bound for Canaan, I'm trav'ling through the wilderness; Your company has been delightful, You, who doth leave my mind distressed. I go away, behind to leave you, Perhaps never to meet again, But if we never have the pleasure, I hope we'll meet on Canaan's land.
14.
Weeping Mary 01:55
Are there anybody here like Mary a-weeping Call to my Jesus and he'll draw nigh Glory glory glory glory Glory be to my God on high Are there anybody here like Peter a-sinkin' Call to my Jesus and he'll draw nigh Glory glory glory glory Glory be to my God on high Are there anybody here like Jailers a-tremblin Call to my Jesus and he'll draw nigh Glory glory glory glory Glory be to my God on high
15.
Alabama 01:27
Angels in shining order stand, Around the Savior's throne; They bow with rev'rence at His feet, And make His glories known. Those happy spirits sing His praise, To all eternity, But I can sing redeeming grace, For Jesus died for me.
16.
Milford 01:34
If angels sung a Savior's birth, On that auspicious morn, We well may imitate their mirth, Now He again is born.
17.
Lo, what a glorious sight appears To our believing eyes; The earth and seas are passed away, And the old rolling skies! From the third heaven, where God resides, That holy, happy place, The new Jerusalem comes down, Adorned with shining grace.
18.
19.
Kedron 01:39
Thou Man of grief, remember me, Thou never canst Thyself forget. Thy last expiring agony, Thy fainting pangs and bloody sweat. Father, if I may call Thee so, Regard my fearful heart's desire; Remove this load of guilty woe, Nor let me in my sins expire! I tremble, lest the wrath divine, Which bruises now my wretched soul, Should bruise this wretched soul of mine, Long as eternal ages roll.
20.
Idumea 02:16
And am I born to die? To lay this body down! And must my trembling spirit fly Into a world unknown? A land of deepest shade, Unpierced by human thought; The dreary regions of the dead, Where all things are forgot! Soon as from earth I go, What will become of me? Eternal happiness or woe Must then my portion be! Waked by the trumpet sound, I from my grave shall rise; And see the Judge with glory crowned, And see the flaming skies!
21.
Morning 02:08
He dies, the friend of sinners dies, Lo! Salem’s daughters weep around; A solemn darkness veils the skies, A sudden trembling shakes the ground. Ye saints approach! the anguish view Of Him who groans beneath your load, He gives His precious life for you, For you He sheds His precious blood. Here’s love and grief beyond degree: The Lord of glory dies for men; But lo! what sudden joys we see! Jesus, the dead, revives again. The rising God forsakes the tomb; Up to His Father’s court He flies, Cherubic legions guard Him home, And shout Him welcome to the skies.

about

In Colonial America, traveling singing masters taught part-singing to townsfolk as a community activity that combined sacred and secular values. Concurrent with the rise of these community choirs was the development of Sacred Harp music, invigorating melodic hymns that were widely popular throughout young America. In this seminal recording form 1978, the Word of Mouth Chorus explores this uniquely American repertoire here, with “enthusiastic” performances that are “too arresting to miss” (New York Times).
