about

Composed by R. R. Osborne (fl 1855?). Words by John Cennick, 1743. The bass part was added by J. Smith in 1859.

This revival spiritual provides an example of the open harmony—the octaves and parallel fifths—so common in traditional shape-note music. In this recording the singers overlay the parts (tenor, and then bass, alto and treble) with the full texture coming through only in the last verse.

lyrics

Jesus, my all to heav'n is gone,
Glory Hallelujah;
He whom I fix my hopes upon!
Glory Hallelujah!

Chorus:

I want a seat in Paradise,
Glory Hallelujah!
I love that union never dies,
Glory Hallelujah!

His track I see and I'll pursue,
Glory Hallelujah;
The narrow way till Him I view,
Glory Hallelujah!

(Chorus)

Lo! glad I come and Thou, dear Lamb,
Glory Hallelujah;
Shalt take me to Thee as I am,
Glory, Hallelujah!

(Chorus)
