For a class assignment to come up with songs based on local history for a course at Marlboro College (VT) taught by folk-singer Tony Barrand, student Carole Moody Crompton wrote this moving poem about a woman homesteader, and set it to the music of "Fiducia", a shape-note tune by William Walker published in the "Southern Harmony" in 1835.
