about

Rupert Ignaz Mayr (1646-1712) was a violinist, organist, composer and kapellmeister who worked in the important Cathedral of Passau in the southwest corner of Germany, and later at the Kurfürstliche Kapelle in Munich. The 'Magnificat' is part of a collection of psalms and caticles printed in 1706. It is scored for four-part choir with two independent violin parts and continuo, with optional instruments doubling the lower choir parts (which we have omitted). The work is a miniature gem: Mayr transforms every sentence of the text into a fitting musical phrase, highlighting the meaning with dramatic effects.
