about

Francesco Cavalli (1602-1676) was Monteverdi's successor as director of music at S. Mark's Cathedral in Venice. The psalm 'Lauda Jerusalem' is part of a large Marian Vespers printed in 1656. Using a much larger and grander scale than Mayr, Cavalli combines two four-part vocal choirs, three instrumental parts and basso continuo. The composition divides into separate sections which are arranged like a cantata, alternating massive tuttis with solos and duets. Making use of some of the same techniques as in his operas, he creates wonderful dramatic effects through constant contrasts of voicing, phrasing and vocal color.
