about

The madrigal “Hor che la vaga Aurora” (“Now with the Dawn the Sun Wakes”) was written by Vittoria Aleotti for SATB voices and rearranged by Mollie for treble voices for this concert program.

Vittoria Aleotti (ca. 1573-1646) was one of five daughters of the successful Italian architect Giovanni Battista Aleotti, a resident of Ferrara. Vittoria’s musical talent was recognized early and she was first given private lessons with the accomplished musicians Alessandro Milleville and Ercole Pasquini. Later, at the tender age of about 6, she began music studies at the nearby convent of San Vito. She performed both vocal and instrumental music in the homes of prominent members of the local community. When she was 14, she decided to take the vows of a nun. During her time at San Vito she became music mistress, mastered many instruments — notably organ — and set about composing music.

Her first published musical composition appeared when she was still a teenager. Her father asked the court poet Giovanni Battista Guarini for verses Vittoria could set to music in order to create madrigals. These were published in 1593 as “Ghirlanda de madrigali.” In the same year, her “Sacrae cantiones quique, septem, octo and decem vocibus decantande” was published, making it the first book of sacred music written by a woman.

lyrics

Now that lovely Dawn
riding a fiery chariot
appears everywhere
with Latona's son
and shows her flaxon hair
to the Alps
and to the countryside near us
With sweet tones
he plays his tuned lyre
so that wandering spirits
listen intently
to the harmonies
that lift and send
our souls heavenward
