about

Words by John Leland, 1935; music anonymous (alto by S.M.Denson, 1911).

The theme of death echoes throughout the shape-note collections of the 19th century. John Leland, a Massachusetts Baptist preacher, wrote the verse heard in this beautiful fuging tune.

lyrics

The day is past and gone,
The evening shades appear;
Oh may we all remember well,
The night of death is near.

We lay our garments by,
Upon our beds to rest:
So death will soon disrobe us all,
Of what we here possess.

And when our days are past
And we from time remove
Oh, may we in thy bosom rest
Thy bosom of thy love
