about

Composed in 1859 by J. P. Reese (1828-1900), with alto added by S.M. Denson in 1911. Words by Charles Wesley, 1759.

This piece, written by another of White's contemporaries, remains a favorite at Sacred Harp singings today. J.P. Reese (also spelled 'Rees') was a well-known Georgia singing-school teacher who helped edit the 1859 and 1869 revisions of the 'Sacred Harp.'

lyrics

Oh what are all my suff'rings here,
If, Lord, Thou count me meet
With that enraptured host t'appear
And worship at Thy feet?
Give joy or grief, give ease or pain,
Take life or friends away,
But let me find them all again
In that eternal day.

Oh what hath Jesus bought for me,
Before my ravished eyes?
Rivers of life divine I see,
And trees of paradise.
I see a world of spirits bright,
Who taste the pleasures there,
They all are robed in spotless white,
And conqu'ring palms they bear.
