about

Bread and Roses - The song is associated with the “Bread and Roses” strike of over 20,000 textile workers in 1912 in Lawrence, MA after mill owners responded to labor legislation reducing the hours in the workweek by cutting workers' pay. Led by immigrant women and organizers from the International Workers of the World, the strike united contract workers of 51 different nationalities. Strike committee meetings were translated into 25 different languages. The strikers faced armed militia sent by the mayor and state police sent by the governor. One reporter noted about the strikers, “They were always marching and singing.” The poem is by James Oppenheim and the melody by Martha Coleman. Arranged by Heidi Wilson.
