Mmamoshimane

|||
Mmamoshimane is one of several Sotho words for mother-in-law, here specifically referring to the mother of the groom. The song describes a moment in the weeing ceremony ritual where the bride - who wears an elaborate wedding veil and with beautifully painted fingernails - is enticed to come out of her in-laws home to stroll and dance in the street with her husband. A symbolic gift of money form the wedding guests is demanded by the household in order to allow the bride to come out and be admired by all. Hence the phrase, "money talks!" at the end of the song.

Translation: I set off from home with my colorful bagpipe. I made a deal with the priest to tend his geese. I drove them out in a windstorm to where the grass grows and no water flows. Up came the big old priest, rolling his eyes and crying. He slapped me twice and took away my bagpipe.

Translation: For three years Stana, your love has caused me great pain. I take a knife and cut open my heart where you will find a poisoned love. Oh how sad and painful. I love you but you have chosen another. If I can't have you as a beautiful young woman I will wait until you are a widow dressed in black. If I can't have you here on earth, I'll wait until we are up in heaven.
