- Speak to your mother, Zlata, tell her to give you to me. - ''ve told her, lad, I've told her. I've told mother and father. But they won't give me to you because you are very poor. - I'll go abroad to work, Zlata and I'll earn some money. Speak to your mother, Zlata, tell her!

An almond tree was growing, tall and thin. Beneath the tree, a young man with a girl, loving each other, embracing, talking. - Tell me, dear, what is foremost for you? What is most precious in all the world? Is it money, or a dowry, or, perhaps, love? - Oh, it's not money, nor a dowry! Only love!

about

Much of the music we perform comes from community singing traditions which are not primarily performance oriented. The music was—and is—sung and played at community festivals, at work and at play, for dances, in worship services or at participatory singing conventions. We are drawn to this repertoire because of its power, honesty and integrity. As performers we walk the fine line of trying to represent the spontaneity and spirit of the original traditions while also polishing our sound and our arrangements in the hope of moving and delighting our audiences. This album, a selection of pieces we performed while touring in England and Europe in the autumn of 1998, represents a sampling of some of these widely varying styles and traditions.

Based in Vermont and led by Larry Gordon, Northern Harmony's unusual and arresting repertoire, wide command of diverse vocal styles, and dynamic stage presence make the troupe transcend the usual restrictive labels of 'folk music', 'early music', or classical 'choral music'. Their robust and exuberant, straight-toned sound will surely knock your socks off.
