A compilation of music of composer Neely Bruce of Middletown, Connecticut.
A conductor, concert pianist, and gifted and prolific composer with hundreds of works to his credit in a phenomenally wide range of styles, Neely Bruce's music tastes run from rock opera to classical piano, from simple parlor songs to ultra avant garde vocal techniques.
Neely's shape-note music became an instant favorite of ours in the early 1990s. He chose wonderfully graphic texts from unusual sources, he capture the traditional shape-note sound and rhythmic drive, he had a great knack for matching the natural declamation of the text in the music—and he wrote great alto parts! The Emily Dickinson settings and Shaker settings in this album share these same attributes.
This recording was a project of a Village Harmony traveling summer camp in 1997, with 22 teen singers plus a number of guest singers who had performed some of these pieces with Village Harmony and Bayley-Hazen Singers in the past. The grand sound of the full group heard on most of the shape-note numbers contrasts wonderfully with the smaller and younger forces heard on most of the Shaker songs and Dickinson pieces.
