A girl was making a wreath and put it on her head to see how it fit. She then went to the well to fetch water, where a crazy lad snuck up to steal her head wreath. The girl yelled loudly, so that her brothers and the young bachelor could all hear. "Oh, my brothers," she said, "Come and get him, but don't do anything to hurt him. I want to punish him myself ! I will tie him up myself with my blond hair, and I will shoot him with my black eyes."

about

This album presents a distillation of the concert programs from Northern Harmony's three months of touring in the autumn of 2000. Those travels included three weeks in Germany and The Netherlands and two months touring throughout the US and Canada. The mixed-age group included a large contingent of recent graduates of Village Harmony as well as some recent college graduates and a handful of older singers. Most had sung and toured with us in various combinations for many years.

As usual our program includes a very eclectic mix of musical traditions. We love moving back and forth between these very different singing styles, and we work hard at trying to master these different vocal techniques. Two wonderful teachers helped us with the music on this album: Carl Linich, an American singer fluent in Georgian and expert in the country's singing tradition, taught us most of the Georgian songs here; and Petrana Kucheva, a Bulgarian singer living in New York City, worked with us extensively with our Balkan singing.

Our renditions of the baroque works are somewhat unorthodox, particularly in our instrumentation, which uses clarinets on string and cornetto parts and baritone saxophone and electric keyboard on continuo. This approach is by no means a critique of the period instrument groups, whose brilliant recordings of these works have often been our main inspiration. We simply hope that our performances are compelling in their own right, and further that they may inspire other groups of limited means to find plausible ways of capturing the spirit of some of these great early music works with whatever combination of instrumental and vocal talents is available to them.
